The day started out cold and dreary. It was not a day I was looking forward to. I had to have a surgery. (I am going to be open and share a bit personally here…) I have Crohn’s disease. An autoimmune disease where basically my body is attacking itself. It’s painful and has caused many complications in life on a daily basis, one of them which had been an ongoing issue which required yet another surgery, and it wasn’t going to be fun.
As my husband and I traveled to the surgery center I tried to think on all the blessings in my life. I had a loving and supportive husband (of 5 months) who was by my side, I was blessed with amazing family, I had a great job teaching dance to a bunch of great kids, and Christmas was just a few days away – along with a much needed break from the hectic season of life I was in. Still the nagging dread of what was to come was looming in the back of my mind, along with the reality that this surgery could have complications, or not fix the problem and I would be left with a difficult, painful, life-long issue to deal with.
I didn’t want to think about it and prayed that God would give me peace. I was nervous, but I felt like God gave me what I needed to face what was ahead. We did the check in and all of the necessary pre-op stuff. I had the gown on, the grandma footie socks, the warmer and blanket, the whole shebang. As Seth and I waited for the Surgeon to come back and talk with us before heading into surgery, we were talking about all and sundry, and questioning why everything was taking so long. (It was 6am and there was only one other person there, so it shouldn’t have taken that long.) Just about the time we were going to look go looking for someone, the nurse came in with a smile on her face and said words I never imagined I would here…
“Your pregnancy test came back positive… You’re pregnant! Congratulations!”
In that moment all of life stopped. I could hardly believe it! It felt so surreal. My husband and I turned to each other, wide-eyed, and were like: “What?!” :O My first thought was, “I was pregnant?! How could this be??” (Clearly I had been married for a few months, and I know “how”… *blush* But I didn’t think it was possible.) When I was 16 I was diagnosed with a deformed pituitary gland (the small organ at the base of your brain that is central to all reproductive function) and was told I may not be able to have children, or it would be a difficult process to conceive and be able to carry a child. Even though it was one of the greatest desires of my heart to have children, and I had prayed and prayed and wept before the Lord, asking Him to give me a child one day, I had kind of resigned myself to the fact that I might never have one.
But here I was, with a small child being formed in my womb and I didn’t even know it! What a GIFT!!! That baby instantly became so special to me in so many ways!!! Such joy filled me (and my husband) in that moment! The fact that I was carrying a baby I had cried and prayed for for over 10 years was incredible! What a beautiful change in the events of the day! I walked in with dread and the expectation of pain, and we walked out with smiles on our faces that were bigger and brighter than any we had ever smiled before. We were giddy! I couldn’t stop giggling!
This was one of the happiest day of my life! God really revealed Himself and His love to me that day! …And I have been reminded of it every day since! Oh, what a glorious, merciful, gracious, loving Father we have!!
1 Samuel 1:27 “For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.”
Psalm 113:9 “He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.Praise the LORD!”
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
What is your heart’s cry?
Do you have a deep desire in your heart for something? Perhaps you are in the same place as I, crying out to God for a child. Or perhaps it is a prayer for health (physical, spiritual, mental, or emotional), salvation for a loved one, to be married, financial provision, to be a better spouse/parent/friend/daughter or son, or the desire for a close friend…
Whatever it may be, if you have the deep seated desire for something that you are pleading God for and waiting expectantly, remind yourself daily of these biblical truths…
Enter His gates with THANKSGIVING!
Psalm 100:4 “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.”
Psalm 107:1 “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Start your prayers with thanksgiving! No one likes an ungrateful person coming to them asking them for “more”. Thank the Lord for His gifts and blessings in your life and thank Him for all He is going to do in the future!
My goal is to wake up each morning and start the day out with thankfulness! It makes such a difference in your life if you start everything (your day, a project, a conversation, etc…) with THANKFULNESS!
Know that the Lord sees you where you are at! He KNOWS you!
Psalm 139:1-4 “You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know it all.”
He knows you more than anyone does or every could! He knows every hair on your head, everything you’ve ever done in life, and everything you will ever do in the future. How beautiful it is to be known by our Heavenly Father!
He LOVES you!!
Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
Ephesians 2:4-7 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
It’s such an amazing thought – to know He rejoices over us! He loves us so much, regardless of anything we have done, or could ever do. His tender, loving kindness is overwhelming!
God wants to GIVE you what’s BEST and in HIS right timing!
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
We are His children! Just like we as parents (if you have kids;) want to give what’s best to our little ones (even though they’re little hooligans some times :D), He wants to do the same for us!
Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Faith is “complete trust or confidence in someone or something”. Put your complete faith and TRUST in Christ! He’s got you!
My daughter trusts me and never questions it. She knows I will take care of her, many times before she even knows she has the need. Sometimes she may come to me asking for something and usually keeps at it until she get’s something (usually food. lol.), but she knows I will not let her starve. Sometimes she gets whiny or throws a fit and I am a little less inclined to give her what she wants right away. I do not want to reward with what she wants for bad behavior.
Let’s not be like this. Being whiny and “woe is me”, or throwing our own version of a tantrum… that is never going to get you the answer you desire, but make matters worse. Just as we teach our children to say “ok” when we say no, or learn to be patient when we say “wait”, that is how we must in turn act with out Heavenly Father. As children of God we need to trust that He knows best and to wait on Him.
DON’T BE ANXIOUS or give in to fear or doubt! God is WITH you!
~”Now, more than ever, she knows she will be okay. Not because things will be perfect, but because her God will lead the way.” ~ Morgan Harper Nichols
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Have you ever found worrying, stressing, or being anxious about something to be worth it? I didn’t think so… 😉 The Bible says not to worry or be anxious!
1 – It’s very unhealthy and can physically affect you in many ways when you worry.
2- When you worry or give in to fear, it shows that you don’t have complete trust in God! Think of it this way – Jesus tells us to have a child-like faith. Children trust their parents implicitly. My little one knows that when she’s hungry, I am going to feed her. When she is hurt, I will be there to comfort her and pick her up. When she is trying to walk, I will be there to catch her when she falls. When she is scared, I will be there to calm her fears and make her safe. When she has a need or desire, I will meet that need, or give her what I know she needs even more. She never questions this! This is how we need to act. Trusting in God completely, never questioning or second guessing it. He will never leave us, nor forsake us!
Keep PRAYING and seeking His face!
Psalm 145:18 “The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.”
Pray! Communicate and commune with God and press in. Continue to “knock” until the door is open. Mountains can be moved with prayer! Seek His face! Do not be consumed with your own problems though. Seek God in all things but look outward. One of the best things you can do is serve others. Look not unto your own things, but to those of others and God will bless you!
OBEY His commandments…
1 John 3:22 “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”
Luke 11:24 “He replied,“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
James 1:25 “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”
Joshua 1:8 “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
God says He will bless us if we obey. Just like when we reward our children when they do good, so God rewards us for our obedience! Sometimes our own sin and selfishness ties God’s hands from pouring out blessing in our lives. Pray that God will reveal anything in your life that should be changed. Be humble enough to admit fault, repent, and seek Him for guidance and strength to change! Then watch what God does!
DELIGHT yourself in Him!
Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
This verse is ESPECIALLY important to me! It is spot on in truth! The word “DELIGHT” resounds in my soul.
Delight – “to please (someone) greatly, take great pleasure in”
There have been many points in my life where I struggled. Where I was seeking God and looking for answers. The desires of my heart were heavy and I was seeking God for them. It is then that I am reminded of this verse! I should not be focused on myself and what I want. I should be delighting myself in the Lord and trusting Him to guide my steps and answer in His timing!
Our pleasure and joy should be in the Lord, and Him alone. Anything this world has to offer is nothing to that of the Lord. The closer we draw to the Lord, the more His heart becomes ours, and the more His desires become our desires!
If you are seeking God for health – Perhaps it is His will that you go through these trials and tribulations to learn lessons, learn to lean and rely on Him for strength, or so that you are able to relate and encourage others who may be going through the same things! Maybe He has already healed you in ways you never even realized, or perhaps your healing will come in time. Be patient and trust that He knows best. If you are seeking for spiritual, mental or emotional health and healing – Trust God and seek His face in all things! Surrender to Him and bask in His love. He knows what you are going through and He will always be faithful to be there for you!!
If you are praying for salvation for someone– Be salt and light! Keep planting seeds. He knows their hearts and He knows your heart for their salvation. Intercede for them and keep being the love of Christ to them!
Are you praying to God for a child? – I know your heart! Having a child and a family is a blessed thing. Keep praying! God may have a little one in heaven waiting for the perfect time to come to earth to meet you! Know that sometimes though, it’s God’s will for you to adopt instead of have a biological child. Yes, it may be heart breaking if it was a desire of your heart to birth your own child, but know that there are babies out there who need a Mommy and a Daddy! There are thousands of children in the world that NEED love, and perhaps not being able to have your own is God’s way of saying that He wants you to open your heart and your home to children in need! God may have the perfect little child just waiting for you. He says that we are to take care of the widows and orphans. Keep yourself open to adoption and don’t close yourself and your heart because you can’t have one of your own. Take a step in faith and look into it and just see what doors God might open!
If you are praying for a spouse – Remember that Jesus should be your FIRST LOVE! Pursue Him. Fall in love with Him and dwell in a place of contentment that He will bring someone into your life when it’s right. Don’t worry or fret. Be proactive though. You can’t just sit at home and think that God is going to just drop someone into your lap. (Don’t get me wrong, sometimes He does do that, but He also calls us to step out in Faith.) Get out. Be friendly. Meet people. Don’t be foolish with trying to jump into relationships prematurely, but know what you want in a spouse, and trust that God will lead you and guide you when the time is right. Take some leaps of faith. Try some doors. If He shuts one, rest in Him until another one opens. Finding that perfect spouse is AMAZING! Hold out for God’s best! Don’t settle. Watch and wait and see how He blows your socks off!!
If you are praying for financial provision– The Bible says not to worry about tomorrow, for He will take care it. He sees your situation. Nothing is too small to go past His notice. His eye is even on the little sparrows that even us tiny humans hardly notice… Trust God! Many times we can get by on far less than we realize. We also have to remember our finances our God’s. Everything we have is because of His unending faithfulness. If you are struggling, are you tithing? Giving God His 10%, our first fruits, may be the difference. Even giving the first fruits of our time can make a big difference in life. Assess your own life and see what you can do to change to be in line with God’s will. Forsaking any sin that may be hindering Him from blessing you to the fullest. Sometimes, it’s God’s will that you continue to trust Him daily for financial provision. Don’t be anxious. Instead rest in His love and faithfulness! He’s got!! 😉
If your desire is to be a better spouse/parent/friend/daughter or son– Spend time with God! Learn to meditate on His word day and night. Walk in the Spirit daily. When you do this, you will begin to take on Christ and His heart and mind more and more, and in turn you WILL be better at the particular role in which you desire to be better in! (Also- see my blog on Friendship. It will be helpful to see what it takes to have a healthy relationship.)
Are you seeking God for a close friend? – Keep praying! Don’t forget that Jesus is your best friend! He will always be by your side! Also remember that for one to make friends, one has to be friendly. Church is the best place to find friends!! You may have to get out of your comfort zone to reach out though. Try connecting through a Bible study, getting involved in a ministry, invite an acquaintance out for coffee and see where that takes you, or perhaps trying to sit in a different part of the sanctuary to meet new people you may not have met if you sit in the same place every week… There are various things you can do. Be proactive and pray that God leads you to just the right friends who will encourage and build you up! (Also- see my blog on Friendship. It will be helpful to see what it takes to have a healthy relationship.)
Perhaps you are seeking God for something I haven’t mentioned – God knows your heart! Keep seeking Him in all things!
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
~”Remember Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – God didn’t put out the fire, He just put Jesus in there with them. It’s not about God “putting out your fires”, it’s about who is in there with you.”~
~”Christ is enough. To have Him and nothing else is to be rich beyond measure.”~ A. W. Tozer
I want to encourage you to expect big things! Our God is a big God! He can do anything. But don’t expect that He is going to answer you in the way YOU THINK it should be! God may not always say “yes” and give you what you want. He may answer some prayers with a “no” instead – but He will ALWAYS give you what you need when you need it!
He wants to give us the desires of our hear, but sometimes they aren’t what’s best for us, or what He wants for us, and we need to refocus on Him and seek Him out until we again realign with Him and HIS WILL.
Mathew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
We must remember, God does not owe us anything and we should never feel entitled. The very fact that we have life and have been saved by His grace, with the promise of going to heaven to be with Him for eternity is more than we deserve. Giving God our lives and serving Him is not enough – we could never attain holiness and purity by just works. But Jesus, in His loving graciousness forgives us, loves us, makes us clean and new and gave us the GREAT GIFT of SALVATION from sin and death!
No matter how much we do on our own, we can never be good enough to earn anything. But in His loving and compassionate nature, He WANT’S to give us good things. He want’s to bless us! He know’s what’s best and we must trust Him completely, for our lives are not our own, but HIS!!
It is amazing when God answers your specific request exactly, and you can see His hand in it! But other times when He answers “no” or “not now” though, this can be incredibly difficult to face. We don’t always know or understand why, but we have to trust that God know’s best. Rest in the fact that you are loved by Him, and He will never leave your side. Life on earth is fleeting and we can’t lose sight of the fact that we are here on earth for HIS GLORY, and soon we will be in heaven to spend eternity with HIM!
Sometime God answers our prayers and we may not even recognize it. We can have this idea in our heads of what we want and how it will be, but often times God has His own plans. Be open and aware of how God might be revealing His answers to you!
I stand here today giving you testimony of God’s faithfulness in my life. In the situation of my daughter, He answered my prayer! And on a day that I was dreading what was to come. He turned it around and brought such an amazing joy – he turned my mourning into dancing!
There have definitely been times I have received “no’s” as well though. I didn’t always understand His reasons, but now I can look back and see how He needed me to take a different path in order to end up where I am today. And by taking that path, multiple blessings unfolded. He knows best and I will continue to trust in His amazing will!
I encourage you to stand firm in faith in every situation in your life! Know that God knows the desires of your heart and wants to bless you! Trust Him and rest in His love, no matter what answers you might receive from Him. Keep your eyes fixed on Him.
I am reminded of the beautiful song “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”. What wonderful words the chorus holds!
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.”
Look to Him and keep running the race He has set before you!! You’ve got this!
And don’t forget – You are beautifully and WONDERFULLY made! God loves you more than you will ever know! 🙂
Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
